Psychotron - Daily Diary 42

That'll do, pig.

7/5/2011

Calories: 2,527
Tennis: 45 minutes

Had a nice stretch of tennis with Chip before my body basically shut down. It was hot as hell, we were in direct sunlight, and for some reason every bug on the planet seemed interested in what was going on in Woodley Gardens on Tuesday night. But it was nice to get out of the house, get a little sun, and remember how unbelievably awful my backhand is.

Still a bit too much snacking, though. I think it's high time I realized that having any kind of chip in the house is a bad call. It's so hard to meter myself with chips and pretzels; I need to just stay the hell away from them.

7/6/2011

Calories: 2,277
Rock Band singing: 45 minutes

Chip swung by again after work. We had talked about some Rock Band, but I wasn't really feeling it right when I got home, so we played a board game and watched PTI instead. Then, later, I decided I did want to play some Rock Band. I wore long pants and tried to sweat out some calories, though I realize now that I was just dehydrating myself. Oh well, more lessons.

7/7/2011

Calories (prior to weigh-in): 460
Calories (total): 2,580
No activities

For those unaware, our final weigh-in took place Thursday afternoon at the Battle Marshal's "garrison" (site of Saturday's culmination party, which you should all plan on attending). We conducted the weigh-in blind; that is, I know my weight, and Nick knows his, and Eddie knows both, but that's it. So when the results are announced Saturday, it'll be news to even us competitors.

Anyways, as a celebration of such an accomplishment (regardless of this last month's numbers), Nick's brother Kenny bought tickets for all four of us to go to a Frederick Keys game and enjoy a fully catered luxury box experience. It was magnificent, though the only reason I was able to stay remotely low on the calories was because I came in so low beforehand.

Looking Forward

I've decided that Friday and Saturday are going to be "free" days for me, while I figure out what my plan is going forward. Tentatively, I believe I'll continue to count my calories every day, because that's the one thing that I think has been a legitimately successful strategy for me. I think I'll also go through all of the previous posts, and all of my diet data from these six months, and try to draw out some useful information. I'm surprised to say that I'm actually looking forward to that "homework," for now at least.

See you Saturday, everybody.

Psychotron - The Reinvention

So you've all seen how last month panned out, or didn't, as it were. There were a variety of reasons why things went poorly, mostly related to a lack of willpower. So now, I'm focused on how to get back on track.

First things first, the whole "going dark" experiment was informative. I do believe I need the public accountability to force myself to stay true, less so for exercise, but definitely for the diet. My activities were fine during the dark week, but I did a lot of unnecessary snacking, and I'm sure that at least part of it was because I didn't have to worry about sharing that information with others. BUT, it was nice to find out that I was still motivated enough to be active, regardless of the accountability.

The party was awesome; kudos to Nick on putting together a nice event. And while everything after about 11:00 is a haze for me, the pictures look like I had a good time. And I woke up in my own bed, so that was a success. I think I'm going to try to start drinking more beer; it should help me regulate my pace a little bit better, plus maybe I can do a better job of keeping track of calories if they're neatly packaged in an aluminum can.

I'm re-establishing the calorie goal of 2,200.

And I've got a new tack for weekends. Historically, I had a little more trouble being active on weekends, because I felt like I should be taking advantage of every moment of my downtime from work doing fun things, like playing video games, watching movies, visiting people, etc. The better way to think about it, though, is that I've got way more free time on weekends. Plenty of time for both recreation and exercising, as well as the opportunity to combine the two with basketball, tennis, Rock Band, or other activities.

Let the final face-off begin. Good luck, Gargantuar.

You're gonna need it.

Psychotron - Daily Diary 35

5/19/11

Calories: 2,208
Rock Band drumming: 60 minutes
Walking: 50 minutes

A nice combo of exercise, the Rock Band drumming was a fun activity, and the walking was focused and deliberate. I like these days because it feels like I sort of make up for days in which I get little or no exercise...

5/20/11

Calories: 2,200
No activities

...like this day. Apparently I have trouble getting myself to be active on Fridays. Back to back weeks I didn't do any sort of activity on Friday (I mean, besides walking between my car and Buffalo Wild Wings). There is something to be said, though, for my decision to eat dinner at home for 650 calories, rather than scarfing down 1,000+ calories of wings...which I really, really wanted to do.

5/21/11

Calories: 2,445
Basketball: 120 minutes

The good part: I played two hours of basketball, worked up a nice sweat, got the muscles going.

The bad part: I jammed the holy hell out of my finger, which has stifled my non-walking activity since then.

5/22/11

Calories: 2,780
Walking: 15 minutes

As I said, my finger was pretty roughed up, so rather than doing any Rock Band drumming, I just went for a short walk around my neighborhood. I had thought it was longer than 15 minutes, but the clock doesn't lie.

I've also noticed that I eat/drink when I get bored, and it seems like Sundays tend to be my most boring days. So, it's about time for me to find an activity for Sundays...and other days.

5/23/11

Calories: 2,690
Walking: 40 minutes

The full caloric effect of getting drunk isn't felt until the next day, when I make foolish decisions to try to get my head back on straight. A breakfast sandwich, three servings of rice, and a variety of snacks put me into the red on my calorie goals. Blah.

Looking Forward

As I said, I think I need some activities, some distractions to keep my mind focused. Exercise is a good thought, and when he gets back from Myrtle, I think I'm going to take Spag up on his offers to play tennis. I guess I could play more Rock Band, but it's a lot more fun when used as a social event. I've also been trying to do some more writing, which is nice, but can be frustrating. And of course, frustration leads to boredom leads to snacking.

You guys got any other ideas on how to fill up time? I can only play through Dead Rising 2 so many times...well, probably. I haven't gotten to whatever that number is yet, but still, there's probably a limit.

Psychotron - Daily Diary 34

Initially I had tried to put together a formula for physical activity, but with all the various things you can do to get exercise, it's a little daunting. So I basically set a general goal of one hour of activity. It's a lot of time, but it's not like I really have anything to "do" after work anyways. Setting aside an hour of time every day to try to better myself is pretty reasonable.

The other thing is that, if it were easy, and something I would have no trouble doing every day, that's not much of a goal, is it? If I set a goal to walk 15 minutes every day, whoopie, who cares? Any day in which I accomplish my goal of one hour of physical activity, I can feel like was a productive day.

5/16/11

Calories: 2,020
Rock Band drumming: 90 minutes
Walking: 40 minutes

Monday was my first foray into the Boboli pizza realm, and I have to say, I was pretty happy with the results. I went for a "white" pizza, just threw some sliced red peppers and onions on the crust with some margarine and Parmesan cheese, and it was a tasty little deal. I had initially planned on just eating half of it and saving the other half, but space is limited in my fridge, and it was goooood. Even so, the whole pizza was 1,080 calories. And this was the full size pizza, not one of the personal pizza size ones (which are the ones I think I'll be using in the future.

Over on my other blog, Chip and I have been coming up with some ideas for pizzas to make. Chime in if you like, here or there.

5/17/11

Calories: 2,115
Weightlifting: 30 minutes

Tuesday is when I ran into my first question mark. Because I actually lifted weights over the course of about an hour, but it was while watching TV, sometimes breaking for 4-5 minutes at a time. The end result was a success, as I definitely got sore, and I worked up a sweat. But I couldn't really say that I "lifted weights" for an hour. What I should've done was gone for a half hour walk to make the point moot. Something to keep in mind for the future.

5/18/11

Calories: 2,250
Weightlifting: 15 minutes
Rock Band singing/guitaring: 60 minutes

My sister's boyfriend offered to grill up dinner for the family on Wednesday, so I went home for that. I had a few too many potato chips, but overall stayed mostly within my intended zone. When I got back to my house, I felt like singing, so I booted up the Rock Band. In between sets, I did some half push-ups. Half push-ups because they're sort of at a 45 degree angle; I do them on my stairs. I haven't got the upper body strength to push up my whole body just yet, but I get a good soreness out of this for now, so it'll do.

Looking Forward

Nothing really of note so far. I've done pretty well sticking with my physical activity plan. One thing I think I'd like to work on, though, is incorporating some more intense activities, or some more extended sessions. Like a 2 hour walk, or some serious basketball. Who's in?

Psychotron - Daily Diary 7

I'd like to offer a bunch of information about what's going on, but I'm sleepy, and I want to get this post done before tomorrow. Tomorrow, as I'm sure you know, is the big weigh-in, the first evaluation of our competition. We've had a good ride so far, and I feel like both Nick and I are still gearing up for even more progress going forward. In reviewing his performance, though, I think I'll be lucky to make it close.

I'll be making another post right after the weigh-in, a one-day review, along with my plans for month two.

2/1/2011

Calories: 2,026

I ate the rest of the pineapple I had bought the week before on Tuesday. It was good, but I think I still have to work on focusing my snacks into just good stuff. I still had some cheese and crackers, and some pretzels.

2/2/2011

Calories: 2,554

I didn't do a very good job of planning this day out, plus I finished a bottle of sake I had handy. It's beginning to look like I hit 2,500-2,600 about once a week. I don't really think that's necessarily a bad thing, but I do prefer not to get so close to/beyond my target of 2,500 calories, especially when I haven't been exercising very much.

2/3/2011

Calories: 1,530

It was a pretty good make-up day on Thursday. I wish I had taken some notes during the day or something, because being able to keep my calories that low (lowest so far on any day) is something I'd like to be able to revisit when I can.

2/4/2011

Calories: 2,002

The calorie count was fine, but the food I ate on Friday was not so good. I had a slice of pizza for lunch, potato chips when I got home, a salad for dinner, and whiskey and a pop tart later on. Like I said, the calorie count came out to be a reasonable number, but I want to eat better than that.

2/5/2011

Calories: 2,165

This day was kind of a wild card. I had been great until about 4:00, when I decided to go up to Tommy's for the evening. After that, I had two small bags of Cheetos, a steak and cheese sandwich, a Lean Cuisine, a bag of popcorn, and a granola bar. BUT, I bought two more pineapples on Thursday, and sliced one on Saturday morning. So I look forward to re-incorporating some fruit again.

Big day tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Psychotron - Daily Diary 4

So we're back to the regular, everyday grind of dieting. I made a trip to the grocery store and bought some good stuff going forward. Among other things, I bought some make-your-own salads, some frozen Lean Cuisine meals, lunchmeat, sandwich thins (basically half-size rolls, 100 calories per roll), and granola bars. They're 100 calories apiece, and they give me something sweet to start or end my day on.

My first physical in like a decade is tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a little bit nervous; I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll discover three noteworthy problems with my body (not weight...that one I know about). I expect to be told to cut the salt, eat more fruits, and ____. The blank is the scary one, obviously, but maybe it'll be something like, "have more sex." How's that for a pickup line? "Hey babe. My doctor says I need to be more sexually active. Are you part of the problem or part of the solution?"

Daily diary GO!

1/21/2011

Calories: 2,565

So here's what happened. I had framed things pretty well by dinner time. I had a slice of pizza for lunch (500 calories), and some wings and a salad from Hard Times Cafe for dinner (total of 1169 calories). I was all set for a quiet night at the PC when Joey G invited me to Dave and Buster's. Four glasses of brandy later, I stumbled back into my house. The only solace I can take is that it's possible I burned a few extra calories protecting Rachel from dinosaurs on The Lost World. Being a hero is hard work.

1/22/2011

Calories: 1,770

I don't know if it was that I was still full from Friday night, or if the guilt of a night of caloric debauchery drove me to it, but I managed to drop my intake by almost thirty percent. I've found Saturdays to actually be pretty workable when it comes to dieting. There's something beautiful and satisfying about not having work the next day. I think it lets you keep your personal focus.

1/23/2011

Calories: 2,482

Of course, that also means that after two days off, looking at the calendar and seeing that the next day is a work day can do some damage to your plans. The biggest hunk of calories on Sunday was a mixed drink I made, with 1/3 creme de menthe and 2/3 Bailey's. I don't know if the 622 calories were actually worth it (the same amount of whiskey is only about 400 calories), but it was definitely good.

1/24/2011

Calories: 1,837

I had a plan come together over the weekend. I did some math and figured out that I could have a good-sized dinner of spaghetti and meatballs for about 1,000 calories. I kept this in mind all day, and had just 500 calories between breakfast and lunch. That meant that I could have my big dinner with room to spare. I used a little bit of that room on a small glass of brandy. Overall, a very satisfying day.

1/25/2011

Calories: 1,776

I looked at today's plan basically the same as the yesterday's. I had an equal amount of leftovers from Monday's spaghetti and meatballs showdown, so I tried to keep it light during the day. Additionally, with my physical tomorrow morning, I have to fast starting at, well, now. So I'm done for the day as far as calories go. Also, 1776 is a pretty neat number to stop on. :)

Analysis

I've been reading over my food log, and the thing that strikes me most is the lack of fruits in it. I've always been wary of fruits, though, because I know they've got some sugars, which translates to calories. Anybody have any suggestions on good, low-calorie fruits I can try to integrate? Please don't say grapefruit; that stuff is gross.

Also, for those of you unaware, the first weigh-in will be February 6th. That's right, Super Bowl Sunday. What better day for a milestone in this epic confrontation?

Psychotron - Daily Diary 2

Here are my last three days before I leave for Disney World on Thursday. I'll do my best to keep a diary of my food while I'm down there, and I'll try to generate calorie counts when I get back (I won't have a computer down there). So this'll be my last post for about a week. See you later.

1/10/11

Calories: 2,100
Activities: Brief walk

Kind of a blah day. It was my first work day while on this diet, and I realized how much of my eating at work was a result of being bored. I've been looking at ways to keep busy when the phones aren't ringing, and actually, writing for this blog has helped a noticeable amount. I've also been trying to post more regularly on my other two blogs (sports and whatever). It's something.

1/11/11

Calories: 1,840
Activities: None

So the "brief walk" I took yesterday seems to have aggravated the cold that I've been trying to beat since New Year's Day. As a result, I elected to stay indoors as much as possible today, avoiding the elements in the hopes that I'll be healthy again once Thursday arrives and my trip down south begins. Work was a little easier today from a diet standpoint, because the phones started to ring quite a bit. I'm happy to see a vacation so close on the horizon.

1/12/11

Calories: 1,745
Activities: Packing for Disney World

Maybe packing for Disney World doesn't qualify as an activity, but it's what I spent half of my night doing. I'm wary of the trip, for dietary reasons, but I'm going to try to shut out any bad feelings and act naturally, even if that means having a couple drinks or getting some fried food. I'll do my best to keep track of my intakes, and report back when I return. Wish me luck!

Day One - Psychotron

So now that we've started this business, it's probably time for me to say a little something.

We had our initial weigh-in last night. Psychotron came in at 346.6; Gargantuar at 309.8. For those of you scoring at home, that means that for every 3.1 pounds he loses, I have to lose about 3.5.

So how are we going to do this? Well, Nick will have his own methods, but let me give you a glimpse into my plans:
  1. Limit myself to 2,500 calories per day. I've started an Excel spreadsheet to monitor my daily calorie intake. I have one big concern, and that's my trip to Disney World from January 14th to 19th, because A) A lot of the stuff I eat, I'll have to guesstimate its calorie content, and B) it's hard to limit yourself in the happiest place on Earth.
  2. Exercise at least 3 days a week. I'm not going to specify a particular exercise, because any time I've done that in the past, I've lost motivation altogether. I do have some specific things I'm going to do, though: tennis, weightlifting, walking/jogging, and yes, playing Rock Band. The drumming, especially on higher difficulties, can be a moderate workout, and it's way more fun than walking.
  3. Do more. Could I be any more vague? Let me explain. I have a habit of being pretty lazy. This will sometimes manifest itself in me choosing to not go places. For example, I'll not go to the grocery store, and instead go to Burger King. I'll not go to the mall/Target/Kohl's, and instead shop online. But getting out of the house more frequently will inevitably put me on my feet more, and that's a good thing. So my goal is, "do more."
  4. Drink more water. I drink a lot of diet soda, and while that's okay as far as calories, I know there's stuff in there that I just shouldn't be exposing my body to quite so frequently. Furthermore, water helps digestion, fills you up, and is overall just good for you.
  5. Get more sleep. I often get only 5-6 hours of sleep a night, and I know that it's simply not enough for me. I have to find a way to convince myself to go to bed at 11:30, and not watch two episodes of The West Wing (even if it is the greatest show on turf). I'm hoping that exercise and dieting will give me more of a satisfied feeling at the end of the day, which will hopefully, in turn, let me feel good about hitting the hay on time.
Will this plan work? Well, I don't know if it'll lead me to victory in the competition (though that's obviously the plan), but I feel confident that it'll put me in a good spot to lose weight and get healthier. I have a specific, secret goal, but I want to keep it a secret until it's a realistic possibility. And no, it's not to "get laid." Stay tuned, and maybe you'll find out.
